The Future of European Football UEFA

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has taken measures to ensure the future of soccer in its region. A recent document released by UEFA following a meeting in Switzerland on April 28, reflects this move.

According to the media release: “The UEFA Club Licensing Committee gathered at the House of European Football, Nyon, today to discuss a variety of topics related club licensing and financial viability.”

According to the information, “with a growing consensus among stakeholders, financial sustainability is crucial to the future success of European football. The committee stressed the importance of implementing UEFA’s regulatory structures consistently and to enhance them if needed.

Recent transactions in European club soccer have raised questions regarding the consistency of the implementation of the new UEFA Financial sustainability Regulations. The committee responded by proposing amendments to the regulations concerning the accounting of transfers operations in order to prevent abusive practices, and to ensure equal treatment .”

UEFA continues to explore ways to make the football in Europe attractive, while examining costs, youth development and the effective allocation of its resources. The comments below capture this resolve.

The committee also agreed to look at new ways of enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness on a long-term basis of European football. In order to achieve this, the Working Group has been appointed to analyze the impact of taxes and social charges on various jurisdictions in order to develop equitable and effective cost control mechanisms. The group will also look at the feasibility of specific actions that could be added to the squad cost rule in order to improve cost control, develop youth players, and redistribute resources.

This inclusive Working Group, which was created today by the UEFA Club Licensing Committee, is composed of 11 members from National Associations as well as the European Club Association and European Leagues. FIFPRO Europe, Football Supporters Europe, and the European Leagues are also represented. Working Group members come from all areas of football, ensuring that they can provide useful insights and recommendations for the development of fair and transparent measures to ensure a healthy European Football ecosystem. These proposals will then be discussed and considered at the next UEFA Executive Committee Meeting on 28th June 2023 .”

As UEFA did, all football unions must prioritize financial stability. Otherwise, a lack in funds could hinder the growth of football if financial projections to ensure liquidity are not implemented.
