Nicolas Cage will play Dracula in the upcoming Renfield. While not much is known about the film, a recent interview gives fans a glimpse into how Cage approaches the performance.
Cage, in a chat with Empire Magazine revealed that his portrayal will be less traditional and more like an Andy Warhol inspired pop art figure.
Cage said that once he understood where director Chris McKay wanted to go, he realized the film had a comedic and pop art angle. “So, I thought: ‘This is going to be a pop art Dracula. Warhol created a wonderful black-on-black Dracula. This is very Warhol-esque.”
Cage also spoke about his research for the character. He referred to the 1922 film Nosferatu, which is one of the original vampire portrayals. The actor, who is a fan of film and its history, spoke about the gestures Max Schreck used to portray Rely Orlok in the 1922 film.
“I noticed all these little gestures that are, at this very moment, considered excessive. When Max Schreck did that [snaps wrist and extends fingers] and puffs smoke into the air, I was like, “What’s that?” Is that dance? What is he saying?’ I told Chris McKay I really wanted to find a place for that in Renfield. I haven’t watched the film, so I’m not sure if they kept it. I tried. It is a studio picture so I wanted to play: “What can I get by with here?” If you are playing Dracula you have a lot of latitude.”
Renfield stars Nicholas Hoult, (Mad Max Fury Street), Awkwafina, Golden Globe winner (The Farewell), Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage (Mandy), Shohreh Aghdashloo, Oscar nominee (The Expanse), Ben Schwartz and Adrian Martinez.
The synopsis focuses on Dracula’s titular henchman. “He has grown tired and sick of the years he’s spent as the dark prince’s lackey,” it reads. He finds a new lease of life when he falls for a feisty and perennially indignant visitor’s cop.
Renfield will be directed and produced Chris McKay, The Tomorrow Struggle. The story is based primarily on an original pitch by The Strolling Lifeless Robert Kirkman. The script was written by Ryan Ridley, Rick & Morty. Skybound Entertainment’s Kirkman and David Alpert are the producers, along with Bryan Furst and Sean Furst. Samantha Nisenboim, McKay’s partner, will be the government producer.
