TikTok suffers another blow as Canada imposes ban

Republican Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte, the Republican Governor of Montana, signed a law Wednesday banning TikTok in the state. He is the first to outlaw this social media application.

In late February, the Montana Legislature introduced Senate Bill 429. The measure was introduced in response to growing national concerns about TikTok’s ties to the Chinese Communist Party and the concern that the app might be used to steal sensitive data. SB419 was sponsored by Montana Republican state senator Shelley Vance and passed the Legislature in early April.

Gianforte, the Montana governor, announced via Twitter that the social media application would be banned by the state in order to protect “Montanans personal and private information from the Chinese Communist Party.”

TikTok replied with a tweet attacking Montana’s law as unconstitutional. “Governor Gianforte signed a law that violates the First Amendment rights for the people of Montana by illegally banning TikTok, which is a platform used by hundreds of thousands across the state.”

According to the measure, Montana prohibits app stores from using the app within its borders. The penalty for violating this law is “$10,000 per discrete violation” as well as “$10,000 every day that the violation continues.” The law is set to take effect in 2024.
